Overview of The Dog Flu

You might have heard of avian bird flu, which is a deadly disease that can affect humans and birds alike. I’m sure you’ve heard of the human version too, which is not deadly but can cause extreme discomfort over the course of onset to recovery. However, as of 2005 there is a new form of the flu that can affect dogs and is aptly named the dog flu. Since this virus is relatively new, many people don’t know much about it, so we’d like to help you learn. In this article, we’ll discuss the facts about dog flu and what it might mean to you and your pet.

The first thing to know is that the dog flu is not deadly to humans. In fact, it is highly unlikely that humans can contract the illness at all, which makes it a much less deadly virus than the avian bird flu. However, it can be deadly to dogs if left untreated or if your pet is not able to develop the antibodies needed to defend against it.

The dog flu was first found in ill greyhounds in California and has since spread to various parts of the country. The symptoms of the dog flu are a cough, so if you notice other dogs in your neighborhood coughing in an odd manner, then you should keep your dog away from them. In most cases, your dog won’t get as sick as a human would get with the flu, so you might not even realize he or she is sick. However, if you notice a persistent cough for 3-4 weeks, then your dog might have the dog flu.

Most dogs don’t need to see a veterinarian if they get the dog flu, however in some cases the virus could be deadly. If you notice your dog’s condition deteriorating, then you should definitely visit the vet to be sure. He can test for the antibodies and should be able to tell if your dog has the virus.

Although the origin of the virus is unknown, it spreads similarly to other viruses, so you should keep your dog away from other sick dogs. Places like kennels and veterinary offices are perfect places to pick up the dog flu, so be extra cautious if you must visit those areas.

If your dog does get infected, then once he or she recovers they will probably be immune from the disease for approximately 2 years. Although there isn’t a cure for the illness, your dog can be treated with medications and cold water baths. Talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions or if you suspect that your dog has the virus. There are new medicines being used all the time, so the treatment could change as research finds new methods to fight this virus.
