Question by Querious: OTC Flu Medication: Advice please?
I have the flu. For the past 5-6 days, when I lie down to sleep, about 30 minutes later I wake up with coughing and I cough for the next several freakin’ hours. The cough is totally in my throat. Non-productive.
Cough syrup with codeine didn’t work.
Is there a difference between Theraflu P.M. and Alka-Seltzer P.M.? If it just has an anti-histamine in it, will that work? Does it have to specify that it works against this damn Post-Nasal Drip?

Answer by codessuck If you feel like something is running down the back of your throat and causing you to cough (the post nasal drip) try an antihistamine and a decongestant.
For colds you need the sedating antihistamines (good thing since you’re taking it at night. I usually recommend benadryl- 25mg should do the trick, but if not try 50. If you need something for the day, you can try chlortrimeton 4mg- while it is sedating as well, I find it less so than benadryl.
As for the decongestant, pseudoephedrine or the like will dry up the secretions.
You can get these separate medications “over the counter” or in several combination preparations- I suspect theraflu may have them (I apologize, I’m not sure what’s in Alkaseltzer PM other than an antacid and something to make you sleepy…)

Answer by mad elaine H1N1 is spread through droplets, so it is possible to contaminate people through breathing or coughing close to them. As long as you are not talking too close to them, it should be fine.
try not to take their distance too personally, a lot of people are a bit paramoid about swine flu.

Question by American Honey: My cat is sick, can cats get the flu?
My cat Mufasa has the flu or something. About 2 days ago I went into the barn and he just looked sick his eyes almost looks like he has two lazy eyes now(they are almost pointing outwards and that weird skin flap that cats have when they close their eyes stays like 1/3 of the way when he opens his eyes) and he feels hot. Hes eating and drinking and still wants to be pet and purrs, but something is just not right. Hes sleeping a lot. When he was healthy he used to keep his tail curled like a sharpei dog but now its just limp. He really looks like he has a cat version of the flu. Do you know what could be wrong with him? Can cats get the flu?
Also he is a barn cat so I don’t know if maybe he got into something he wasn’t suppose to or if he got a bad bird/mouse.

Answer by Maxi Yes cats can get flu, however being an outside cat it could also have eaten something it shouldn’t have, especially mice who may have eaten poison……………this is an appointment to the vet so you know exactly what the problem is.

Around 1 months ago, my 3 months old pomeranian caught a flu and diarrhea, during that period, he wouldn’t touch his food nor his water, the vet told me to force-feed him using pipette, so I did as I was told.
I took turns with my father to feed the dog and apparently my father wasn’t the patient type and fed the dog roughly, the food entered its respiratory system, well that’s what the vet says. My dog has difficulties to breathe and his tongue would turn pale blue and then white. I got frustrated because I don’t think I can keep force-feed him for the rest of his life. My vet is uncertain whether my dog can fully recover.
So my BIG QUESTION is: whether my dog has a chance to fully recover or not??? because im really going crazy /sob
P.S : my seven years old german shepherd just died too. /sadface
