Question by Trillian42: Is a dog who has had kennel cough likely to experience long-term respiratory problems?
A dog we wanted to adopt from the Humane Association is now on medical hold because of kennel cough (with a low grade fever). We would like to be educated as to whether or not we’ll be adopting a dog that can hopefully be healthy in the long term. My aunt has a lot of experience in dog training, and she says we absolutely shouldn’t get this dog–that dogs with kennel cough always have long-term respiratory problems, forever. This doesn’t seem to be in agreement with the research I have done. I was wondering what your thoughts are. He is also pretty thin. I have seen worse, but you can see his ribs at the moment. He may have been abused. Yet, he is sweet and friendly with people and other dogs, though seems a bit more subdued than one would expect of a dog his age (of course, he could’ve been sick when we observed this). Looking forward to your thoughts.
I appreciate the wonderful responses so far! Keep ‘em coming! I just want to reiterate that the dog did have a low grade fever. I don’t know if that means it’s more serious than a “common cold” or not?

CHAN: The bird flu has been recently detected in South Korea. Domestic media says the virus has increased in South Korea despite the country taking quarantine measures last Thursday to stop the spread. STORY: The South Korean government says bird flu has been found in a pair of chickens in Seosan where the first outbreak took place last Thursday. It¡¯s yet to be confirmed whether it is a high or low virulent strain of bird flu. A local newspaper reported today 500 chickens had died in four days at a poultry farm in Yangpyong outside of Seoul. It¡¯s confirmed to be aa mild strain of birdflu, a less serious strain of bird flu. South Korea sees about 20 cases of mild bird flu every year. South Korea expects to cull over 200 thousand poultry by the end of the week to prevent spreading of the highly virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu, – which was found in the country and confirmed last Saturday for the first time in three years, officials said. They will now start culling all poultry within a 500-metre radius of a farm in Iksan in about 200 km from Seoul where the bird flu strain has been detected. The quarantine will include culling 300 pigs and 600 dogs in the area. On Sunday, South Korean Prime Minister had chicken soup in a public gesture to say it’s safe to eat cooked chicken. [Han Myung-sook, Prime Minister]: “The viruses are killed if you boil them for five minutes at 75 degrees celsius. So all the chicken food on sale are safe to eat.” Seoul citizens’ opinion on the

Question by Megan May: Does anyone have experience with canine distemper in a puppy? ?
I have a puppy who has been diagnosed with Canine Distemper Virus and I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. Let me elaborate:

I am currently living in China (I am American) and I bought a puppy about a month ago. I took her to the vet less than a week after buying her and she tested negative for CDV. I was told to bring her back after one week for her shots. After one week, the vet said she had a cold and could not get her shots, but gave me some medicine to help her cold. She also had worms, the doctor suspected. So I gave her the cold medicine for a week and returned again. The doctor said her fever was down but that the worms were not gone yet, so still no shots. After another week of cold medication and worm medication, I went back to the doctor last night and asked them if they could keep her for a few days so she could fully recover (I currently have the flu and don’t feel like she’s getting better at my house, so I figured they could do a better job) and was told that she could stay at the vet’s.
The vet did another CDV test before I left her there and it came back positive, much to my dismay. They told me she had a 10% chance of living, but that they would keep her for two weeks and see what happens. They also said her fever was gone. When I got home I began researching the virus and it seems that each site has a different survival rate. But one thing I noticed is that they all had lack of appetite and diarrhea as symptoms, which she does not have. I am wondering (hoping) that maybe she’s fighting off the infection well, or has she just not gotten to that stage yet?
My family has always had dogs, but this is the first one I’ve owned myself, I am all alone in China, and I guess I’m just looking for some good news. Has anyone experienced the distemper virus in a young puppy before? And what did you find was the best solution? I am dreading having to euthanize her, so I am going to do whatever it takes, but I have to do the humane thing, too. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this :)

I wouldn’t euthanize your puppy, as there’s still the 10% chance of her surviving! She could well be fighting off the illness, and you’ve got to have hope. I hope for all the best!

The dog I used to take care of had allergy problems, just like we do. Take him to the vet and they have a prescription for dogs.
