My golden retriever has been very ill recently and has not eaten for over a week. He is currently on 24 watch at the vets office, getting IV fluids. I’ve been told it is likely a flu infection that has supressed his appetite. How long is expected? I’m beginning to be very worried.

if he’s already at the vet, you’re doing the right thing.

the flu virus will make him tired and achy, which will ruin his appetite, as will the diminished sense of smell. he won’t pick up eating again until he’s through the worst of it. i assure you, the vet’s office is offering him very tasty food every so often to try to tempt him into eating. i wish your poor dog luck.

I’m sorry your dog is sick, If it’s anything like our dogs, it’s as bad as having a child sick.
Anyway, when our dogs stomachs are upset my vet recommended to boil hamburger, drain and rinse it, mix it with cooked white rice and some cottage cheese. It’s always help our dogs, hope it’s helpful for you.

Has he been at the vet for the past week? And still not eating? If this is the case, you might want to look into a second opinion as to what is going on with your dog. What tests have been done? Any x-rays? There are many different reasons dogs stop eating.
