Question by edie .: Our dog is sick…could it be she ate a leaf off my new house plant?
Its a 6″ tropical upright plant. It doesn’t say what kind it is on the label…we have narrowed it down to a few by looking at pictures on the internet. One we think it my be is a Chinese Evergreen. Our Dog is a German Shepard, she vomited last night and this morning and doesn’t want to eat. She just lays around the house but she still barks when she wants outside. My son has been giving her water with a sports bottle. Would a house plant cause this ? I think it could also be a doggie type flu because she has a drippy eye. HELP!

Many common and popular household plants are highly toxic to dogs. A partial list of toxic plants includes poinsettias, lilies, ferns, devil’s ivy, aloe, and ivy. Symptoms of poisoning due to ingestion of toxic plants include vomiting and central nervous system excitement. Many of these plants are fatal if ingested. Please contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has eaten a toxic houseplant. Even if you don’t know if the plant is toxic, call your vet and take your dog and the plant into the office. If the eye discharge has a greenish tint to it it could be some kind of infection and this too should be seen by the vet.

I would take her to the vet, especially since you don’t know what type of plant she ate. You may want to take a leaf of the plant to a nursery to see if they can tell you what type of plant it is also.
