Question by Love my Anthony’s: Sick people around your baby?
My son was born 6 weeks early so from the start we have been advised to keep visitors to a minimum. He is now 3 months old & since it’s flu season our pediatrician has again advised this especially with sick people (which should be obvious.) Everyone is always giving me a hard time about wanting to see the baby & my MIL fights with me over the fact and she wants all these people she knows to see him. Now my mom is giving me a hard time. Her dog was sick the past week so I asked her not to come over because I have a dog & I simply cannot handle a sick puppy & an infant right now! I should add that she doesn’t leave the house without her dog so that was absolutely not an option for her! So today she was going to come over to see the baby but she is telling me her throat hurts and sounds extremely congested. I told her I don’t think it’s a good idea and she told me she “thinks” it is her allergies but she’s taking antibiotics. Then she proceeds to pull a guilt trip on me & tells me “I guess I’ll never see the baby then…”
Am I in the wrong here? I understand I can’t stop my son from getting sick but why would I risk it by knowingly exposing him to sick individuals?
Of course his grandmothers have seen him! They both normally see him atleast 2-3 times a week but when someone is sick I simply don’t want them around my child. I agree it would be completely unreasonable for me to have kept him from everyone for this long. I allow minimal visitors & I do take him for walks & to stores but inside stores I keep the rain cover over his bassinet. As of right now, I keep the visitors down to his grandmothers & his godmother until my pediatrician gives me the okay. I appreciate all the input! =]

Answer by Riley’s Mummy, born 12.09.09 You are completely in the right, and I would be exactly the same way. If people can’t understand that coming over when they are sick is very selfish, then it really their issue not yours. Just keep being upfront and telling them not to come, they will eventually get the hint. You are his mummy and you know whats best for him.

Question by pearl: My dog is sneezing & green mucus coming out of his eyes, no vet around on this holiday weekend. What do we do?
He’s a miniature australian shepherd, about 13 lbs. Any at home cure advice welcome.
Haha, it’s not Valentine’s weekend silly, it’s Presidents Day on Monday ) You must not live in the US… School is out and all banks and most businesses are closed.
As for the emergency vet, I don’t think we’re in dire straits here people. Would you go to the ER for a case of pink eye or a head cold? Not unless you have great insurance… I’ll call Petco in the A.M. to see if they have anything over the counter. If they don’t have anything, I’ll make a vet appt. for sometime this week. In the meantime, he is happy, full of energy and well hydrated.
Thanks for all of your advice.

Question by bob: Can a dog get kennel cough from being around other dogs even if up to date on all his shots?
I have 2 dogs, take them to the dog park and around other dogs often, One of the 2 sounds like he has a cough, the other does not. Just wondering if they can pick up kennel cough even if they have had all the immunizations? Just noticed it today, and…….yes I will be calling the vet 1st thing in the morning.
Best answer:
Answer by BYBs cause suffering and death Yes.
The Bordatella shot only protects against one kind of kennel cough.
And no immunization is 100% foolproof.

Question by souekycleansnet: does anyone have problems with chickens in the city? are there laws for chickens running around in the city?
neighbor has chickens, we live in the city. we have a fenced in yard, our dogs have killed 4 chickens that got in the yard.explained to neighbor we did not want the dogs killing the chickens, he said they were like cats, they could run free, the chickens make holes next to our fence, trying to get in .I read somewhere that to have chickens in the city, have to be vaccinateed for bird flu. I just can not remember where I saw it.
do not know if it was a state law or city.anyone can help?we live in the state of tennessee Beejay
Best answer:
Answer by Miss De Vill I would call your City Hall or Animal Control and inquired about those laws. I know that some subdivisions can impose bans on poultry ( in a Chicagoland area a girl couldn’t keep her duck), so I guess it all depends where you live.

Question by willow woow: can dogs pass around stomach viruses like humans?
my dog threw up today a few times and so did my brother, sister and friends dogs in the past few days. i was wondering if animals can pass around flu bugs like stomach upset like us humans? i know they can pass around kennel cough. (ps i just had the stomach virus last week, could i have given it to him?)
Best answer:
Answer by Kate Dogs can pass around stomach viruses just like humans can, but they can not pass the SAME viruses as humans. Your dog can not get sick with your stomach flu, or vice versa. It is very rare for a virus to jump from one species to another. When that does happen, you end up with strains of flu like the H1N1 “Swine Flu” that has been so prominent in the news over the past month.
