Question by Jackie K: How long is my dog contagious if he has a mild cold?
My dog was sneezing a lot my vet said he had a mild upper respitory infection that he would kick on his own? How long is he contagious?

Best answer:

Answer by Kirsten R
He’s probably only contagious for a few days, but you might as well figure two weeks for the cold to fully pass before you expose him to other dogs.

Question by Kathryn: Looking up Kennel Cough for Dogs? Kennel Cough= The Common Dog Cold??? What?
( about 10 years ago) My Pomeranian died after 1 week in the Kennel (at the vets) from what we were told at the vets was Kennel Cough which she was not vaccinated for because they were not required to do so at the time. I just looked it up and Kennel Cough isn’t supposed to be fatal. I just want to know why these so called vets did not see my dog coughing and if it really WAS Kennel Cough that could kill her after only a week. And I am wondering if I should have sued them.

Yes, kennel cough CAN kill. When left untreated (or even sometimes when it is treated), it can turn into pneumonia, which can be very much fatal, and in a very short period of time. I would be suspicious that she died while supposedly under the care of a veterinarian, though. Any vet should have been able to recognize the symptoms early and treat appropriately. While there would certainly be a chance that it could still kill a dog even with aggressive treatment, it would be very unusual. 10 years later, though, it’s irrelevant. Any statute of limitations for negligence has surely expired, and there’s nothing you can do now. Probably better not to dwell on it and move on.

Omg this cold is ferocious. This fit came on after I took my dog out in the cold. My nose is getting so red, blowing it every few minutes. Now getting a cough, wondering if I have the flu? From bad to worse it seems.

Question by TONYA: Is it always neccesary to give a dog antibiotics if he has a cold?
I took my 16 wk old puppy to the vet for vaccinations and mentioned that she was sneezing a bit. The vet then told me she probably needed clavamox but he had to run blood tests and the whole thing would be $ 200! I asked if I could just have the clavamox and he said not unless I paid for all the tests. Otherwise the dog is healthy, no fever, lungs are clear and she is active and has a huge appeite. Am I a horrible dog mom for not paying the money and is it possible if she has aa cold it will just clear up on its own?

Best answer:

Answer by flying_centaur
Don’t pay for something that won’t do any good. Viruses can’t be cured by antibiotics. Absolutely cannot. You just have to let them run their course. It could also be an allergy. Or just some dust in the air.

NO THATS NOT OK!
I volunteered in a vets office and someone actually called and asked that question. Its not safe and the way humans and animals respond to different medicines is not always the same, dont risk it.

Question by Reba: What would make my body ache everyday if I don’t have a cold or flu?
Everyday I wake up and get out of bed I ache. I ache all day untill I go to bed. Theres is nothing in my routine or life style that has changed to create this aching I have and I can’t tell if its my bones or muscles but its mostly in my main body area. I have thought maybe a vitamin deficiancey but I don’t know what, I started a side job walking this lady’s dogs everyday but that was over a month ago. I do the same chores as always and its nothing excerting. Iv’e ruled out things one by one trying to figure this out. Let me add that I’m not over weight, in pretty good condition, never broke any bones and I’m 46 years old. I do however have high blood pressure, very high blood pressure and don’t take anything for it cause I don’t have any medical coverage so I can’t see a doctor and can’t afford to pay cash for a doctor visit either. I’m fine when I’m sitting or laying down. I ache when I stretch or walk around also. I think its something thats simple cause I’ve been like this for maybe a month now but just need some suggestions or ideas on how to stop this aching. I’m puzzled and would like some help to figure this out yet I know noone can diagnose me through yahoo q & a. What do you think I can do to help myself?

I feel that way when my blood sugar gets to high . You can get a blood glucose monitor , lancets and test strips at most drug stores , wally world and such. You can buy that cheaper than a doctors appt. and lab cost . If it is high, there are several web sites that offer advise and how to cook to help control it. Also, on the lighter side , old age is creeping up and causing that with me also . lol

Question by Curious: Is my dog sick? Her nose is warm and I was told it should be cold. I notice that she seems to be sneezing?
No change otherwise in her ordinary activities. How much sleep does she need a day? Can she sleep outside or should she stay inside the house?

Best answer:

Answer by Bae Bae
Well my dog’s nose is always warm and she sneezes like crazy. but nothing is wrong with her. It’s probably the breed of the dog. And , if it’s cold outside, her body probably just warms up to keep warm.

Question by Mind Your P’s: Best dogs for cold climates & apartment living?
I had a Pembroke Welsh Corgi before I moved to Colorado. I lived in California, where it was warmer so he loved it there, especially the beach. I tried to bring him up here to stay when my boyfriend and I moved but it didn’t work out. He refused to go outside at all in the snow and since he didn’t,became destructive in the house so I had to take him back to live with my mom where he’s happy. I miss having a dog around me. I grew up with having at least one in the house at all times and since I’ve been able to change jobs,I’ll be home and can take care and exercise one. My boyfriend’s happy with the idea and won’t mind having a hiking/biking buddy.

The thing is finding a breed that can handle the cold and live in an apartment but like to go out and exercise too. We plan on moving into a house soon, before the end of 2011 if all goes well,so it’d only be for a little bit with the apartment thing, but we have neighbors and don’t need to disturb them. My boyfriend and I are both active so exercising a dog wouldn’t be much trouble. I always run in the morning and in the evening, everyday unless the weather’s really bad or I’m sick with the flu or something. Since I’ll be working from home now,I could easily add a few more walks/jogs in during the day. My boyfriend also runs but his job is more demanding during the week so he doesn’t always get to go. But he likes to go hiking and biking with his friends on the weekends which is something he’d have no troubles taking the dog along. We don’t really want a dog who sheds a lot but I figure that’s next to impossible to have since the dog has to take the cold. We’d rather have one who was easy to train and could learn quickly since if the dog goes hiking or biking it’ll be off leash mostly. Also because we currently stay in an apartment and we can’t have the dog barking like my little clown Corgi used to do,it was funny to us to watch him bark just to hear himself but not so much to the neighbors. The dog must also get along with other dogs(friend’s pets and maybe our own later on down the road) and children of all ages, newborns to teens.

Any breed suggestions?

**We are currently still checking with the local shelters & rescues but just want some ideas. We haven’t decided for sure whether or not we’ll rescue or buy from a breeder. It’s just a matter of if & when we find the right puppy or dog.
