He is 7 years old. And has always been in good health. So this is really wierd. No appetite change or attitude, just lots of sneezing – one after another – usually 6 in a row.

Question by cal74sb: Is this just a simple dog cough?
What are the chances that a dog can get just a simple cough, that will only last a few days?

Here are the facts:
He’s a 15 year old lab mix, who does not get his shots anymore because he suffered from an auto-immune disease 2 years ago (IMHA) and nearly died. Giving him his shots is considered too risky, and could cause the IMHA to return. Two nights ago he woke up and was hacking and coughing (dry) on and off for an hour. He then mellowed out, and fell asleep with the occasional cough during sleep. The next morning he was fine. Since then, the coughs become much milder. It seems that only if he lays flat, sideways, he will cough a little … then he’ll adjust his position to the ’sphinx-like’ position, and he’ll sleep just fine. He also coughs a little right after he drinks some water.

I really would like to only hear from either Vets or Vet Techs, or someone who’s really had experience with this. I deeply care for my little senior, I do not take the cough lightly, and am not trying to save a buck by diagnosing here. I’m just wondering since he really does seem to be better, whether there is just a simple dog cough that could be the culprit. I’m off tomorrow, so if there is the slightest chance that he’s still uncomfortable today, I will of course take him to his regular vet. But he has been eating, drinking, playing and goofing around as usual.

Thank you.

I am not a vet or a vet tech but have owned many dogs. I do know that in an older dog specially a cough could mean heart problems. Given his age the best thing you can do is to take him to the vet for a good overall checkup. Good luck. Hope he is okay.

Question by krysten_vance_2004: I just got a dog from the pound. She seems to do the reverse cough quite a bit but she is healthy otherwise.?
Should I be worried about her reverse cough? She is a small dog (6.3 pounds) and she does this cough when she gets excited or is on her leash. Any suggestions?

dont worry more then likley she just has kennel cough,my wife works for the humane society, it happens often ,Kennel cough is a fairly common ailment in dogs. People tend to associate it with dogs who either are being or recently have been boarded (or “kenneled”). But your dog need not be boarded to catch kennel cough. Kennel cough is caused by an airborne virus, which is highly contageous. Any time your dog is in the vicinity of an infected dog, the potential exists for infection. The incubation period is about 8-10 days, meaning your dog will not display symptoms of illness for about 8-10 days following exposure to the virus. Having a strong immune system is best way to avoid coming down with symptoms if/when your dog is exposed to the virus. This is why not every dog in the kennel (or house) will get it if there is an outbreak.

Although there is a vaccine (Bordatella) for Kennel Cough, it is often not effective in preventing infection. The most likely explanation for this is that there are many strains and mutations of the virus out there. Therefore, it is hit or miss whether the vaccine used on your dog will be the right one for the strain with which your dog comes into contact. This is similar to the “flu shot” for people; each year a vaccine is developed based on which strain(s) are suspected to be most prevalent. Be aware that your dog can still catch Kennel Cough even if s/he has had a shot to prevent it.

The usual symptoms of Kennel Cough include a dry, “non-productive” cough. The dog sounds as if there is something stuck or caught in the throat and the coughing is an unsuccessful attempt to dislodge the object. Sometimes the coughing/gagging seems very violent. The episodes of coughing may go on for minutes at a time and then be repeated at intervals. Of course you will want to check your dog and make certain that there isn’t anything actually stuck in the throat! One way you can “test” for Kennel Cough is to press the throat gently, right in the collar area. If the dog has Kennel Cough, this will probably trigger some coughing.

If your dog does develop Kennel Cough symptoms, don’t panic! The way this illness operates is analagous to the common cold that we humans sometimes catch; simply put: it must run its course. There is no magic pill or cure, but there are many ways to treat and ease the symptoms. The goal is to support the body (immune system) while it is healing itself. Antibiotics are NOT indicated (although they are routinely prescribed and used) because this is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibiotic use is actually thought to slow the healing process. Kennel cough generally will be gone in two weeks time or less, with or without antibiotics (but probably faster without).

Answer by Jeff_Hardys_Girl
Remember that she is fighting off an illness. That can take a lot out of anything, dog or human. I would say keep her comfortable. The meds might also be making her lethargic. Have an emergency vets number handy in case she starts to deteriorate.

The Vet would have to check him out to know for sure. Right now, I have two dogs that are having allergy problems with the changy weather and I give them Benadryl when they get like that. But check with your Vet.

Question by Eilanna: Should I be worried? I’m mostly just confused, actually!?
Yeah, so I’ve been hearing about this swine influenza. I understand it comes from Mexico & pigs & such. I also understand that the media is making it sounds crazier than it really is. My question? Why is the media making such a big deal of it, if there is a cure coming within 60 days?

I’ve heard it gets worth in the fall & winter, so we are more at risk then. My second question: Is my family safe? Are my pet dogs safe? I’m worried for them! My sister is 18, I am 12, and my parents are between 50 and 56.

I live in Massachusetts, close to Boston. I have a good friend who is GOING to Mexico! I’m kinda creeped out because she goes to my school. I’m thinking she’s going to cancel the trip, but I don’t know for sure since she’s in Europe now. If she DOES decide to go, is it a good choice to return to school after the holidays?

Should I be scared? I’m confused & yes I have a lot of questions. I really would like answers.
Oh wait, here’s one more: How can I get Swine flu?

Thanks. Please explain this to me simply, I’m not the brightest. :D
Oh, and please don’t make me panic, I.E. “Your going to die. I suggest you run & hide.” That won’t help. Lol.

Thanks.

Lina Garcia.
