Question by DainnN: Help me decide, Veterinarian or Doctor? Please help me decide im a Senior in HS!?
I can’t decide whether i want to be a vet or a doctor..i love helping and making things better so please take time to read my story into each one (vet/doctor)
i love animals ( i have 5 dogs, i have had some rabbits and cats before ) and i usually take care of them all. The reason i want to be a vet is because i want to be the one who knows what to do when a dog or cat is injured, to make people smile because i helped them (its a mix between helping them and their animal). I really got initiative to become a vet when i saved my own dog’s life because of the knowledge i knew already about some biological factors in humans ( which at the time i didn’t think was so different). I won’t go into too much detail but basically when i found my dog (shes a miniature chihuahua) under our car (because apparently some dog were trying to get at her and ripped her entire stomach area and flesh around there)-her body was shutting down because of the blood she had loss over an extended time period (to save her i used science to my best reasoning as i could). My first initial action was to give her fluids as soon as possible, she would not take them,so i got a small syringe and made her drink it (i used Gatorade because it has electrolytes, enough to give her energy). (NOW-at the time we had no money to take her to the vet so i took initiative) There was no more bleeding when i found her so i cleaned her wounds as best as i could and used antibiotic cream to cover the entire area,i wrapped her body in some wrapping i found, covered her in a towel because she was shaking, she needed heat (i added more cream and changed her coverings everyday) and she started walking and eating (before i still fed her with the syringe) and now her flesh under there is completely repaired and i would have to say it was better than before and she’s fine now.
I want to be a doctor well just as the same as i want to be a vet,to help people. My understanding of the human body at the moment is a little more than average compared to most people. I LOVE my science classes and any class that has to do with the human body.I find it fascinating of the things we’re capable of (yet no one climbs to their potential but our bodies are extraordinary in many ways). My brothers come to me when they need medical advice (for common things like flu, pains in certain areas and other small things). I have some knowledge in first aid (i know what to do in most cases).I think i would make a good doctor but i just don’t know what to specialize in,there are so many different opportunities in the medical field, its overwhelming!
I can’t decide over my love for animals or helping people.
what do you think?

Well, I can fully understand your quandary on this matter. You should also look at the required University entrance scores. Generally, veterinary science requires a higher entrance rank. Also, being a Doctor requires people skills, whereas Veterinary science requires you only to deal with animals, so you do not have to be an emotional or socially capable person. At the end of the day though, look to the future. Which of the two can you see yourself doing in twenty years time? Will you get bored of one or the other?
The choice is yours at the end of the day
